Accessibility Statement

We want to ensure that all visitors to the website of Polmanarkivet can find the information they need for their visit. We’re committed to making this web site usable to all people by meeting web accessibility standards.

This accessibility statement applies to the Polmanarkivet website that launched in 2023, and all microsites operated by us. This includes polmanarkivet.com and any subdomains.

On this website, you can:

  • Change colours, contrast levels and fonts, for example via a browser extension
  • Zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
  • Navigate most of the site using just a keyboard
  • Navigate most of the site using speech recognition software
  • Listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

The Centre for Accessibility Australia has advice on setting up accessibility features on your device. They also provide a free Helpdesk for people with disability, their families and carers to support people with disability who are finding it difficult to access content online.

Website Accessibility

We want everyone to be able to access the content on this web site, in accordance with the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) and the Australian Human Rights Commission Act 1986 (AHRC Act). Our web content is designed to meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1. These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible and user-friendly. The guidelines have three levels of accessibility (A, AA, and AAA). We have chosen level AA as the goal for Polmanarkivet’s website. Read about the guidelines.

We conducted an accessibility audit with Accessibility Checker and WAVE to identify web accessibility issues that do not meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). Although many of the critical errors have been corrected, there are still WCAG 2.1 criteria to work through. Human evaluation is also important because no tool alone can determine if a site meets accessibility standards. We’re continuing to learn and determined to making this site as accessible as possible.

At a minimum, to ensure we meet most of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1, this web site:

  • Uses headings to structure content
  • Uses descriptive link text
  • Adds image alt text for all images
  • Adds labels and titles to forms
  • Includes skip links
  • Includes captions and text transcripts for audio files
  • Enables most of the site to be navigated using a keyboard
  • Enables most of the site to be navigated using speech recognition software
  • Enables listening to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)
  • Includes multiple contact options
  • Includes content written in simple language

Technical information and compliance status

Polmanarkivet is committed to making its websites accessible, in accordance with the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) and the Australian Human Rights Commission Act 1986 (AHRC Act).

Compliance status

Polmanarkivet websites are partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances and exemptions listed below.

Non-accessible content

The following list provides details of the content which is currently non-accessible. We are currently reviewing all of our content and this list will be updated as more information becomes available.

There are four critical issues from our Accessibility Checker audit:

  • Ensures the contrast between foreground and background colours meets WCAG 2 AA minimum contrast ratio thresholds
  • Ensures the order of headings is semantically correct
  • Ensures <img> elements have alternate text or a role of none or presentation
  • Ensures links have discernible text

In addition, there are 36 contrast errors from the WAVE audit. This is a result of our main gold branding colour failing the WCAG AA contrast ratio for small text. We are working to improve the contrast ratio by meeting a 4.5:1 colour ratio.

Disproportionate burden

There is some content that we have assessed as a disproportionate burden due to our limited resources. This means that making some parts of the website complaint is likely to have a significant impact on our ability to function. This includes:

Historic content

There are no plans to update all historic content because this would create a disproportionate burden. On request, we may be able to provide information in alternative formats.

PDFs and other documents

Some older PDFs and Microsoft Office documents that you can view from our websites do not meet accessibility standards and there are no plans to update them.

Third party content

We use a number of third-party services to provide content on polmanarkivet.com. The accessibility features of these services are not under our control and we are not responsible for their implementation. However, we try to make them accessible where we can. Some of these services include:

  • Ghost (membership platform)
  • CookieYes (cookie management platform)
  • YouTube (video content)
  • Google Maps (interactive maps)
  • Letterbird (contact forms)
  • Shorthand (digital stories platform)

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

As noted above, Polmanarkivet is committed to making this web site usable to all people by meeting or or exceeding the requirements of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 Level AA . We want to make our content accessible to everyone. However, this is an ongoing project that will require more education, review, and resourcing.

Here’s what we’re doing to improve accessibility:

  • Ensuring that all new content and services are designed to the highest WCAG standards possible.
  • Continuing to test our new designs and products with a broad and diverse range of audiences.
  • Periodic review of content with WAVE or other web accessibility evaluation tools.
  • Continuing education about web accessibility, plain language, inclusion, and disability.
