Description

Painting of the 15 founders of the Imperial Free Economic Society of Russia.

Founded in 1765, the Free Economic Society is the first public organization in Russia and one of the world's oldest public organizations.

In the fall of 1765, a group of Russia's most influential and famous public officials (Count R.I. Vorontsov, Prince G.G. Orlov, Count I.G. Chernyshev, Senator A.V. Olsufyev and others) turned to Catherine the Great with a request to extend her personal supreme patronage to their "unification based on voluntary consent" aimed at "improving agriculture and territorial arrangement" in the country. The Empress approved the project with her letter of reply as of October 31st, 1765.
