What's the difference between a free Member and a paid Supporter?
We have two tiers for our community:
Our free Member tier is for anyone who wants to follow our work. Members receive our monthly newsletter and can comment on public articles. All of our core family history articles are always available to the public, and our newsletter is the best way to be notified when we publish new ones.
Our paid Supporter tier is for readers who wish to directly fund our research and preservation efforts. As a thank you, Supporters receive everything Members do, plus complete access to our exclusive library of in-depth research, long-form articles, and methodology guides.
How often will I receive newsletters or content as a Member?
We want to make sure that your subscription brings value to you. The Members’ Newsletter is sent monthly. We aim for 12 issues per calendar year. Supporters also gain immediate and unlimited access to our growing library of exclusive articles and stories. We aim to add one to two new premium articles for our Supporters each month.
Is my payment information secure?
Yes, subscriptions are managed by Stripe to securely process payments. Stripe uses best-in-class security practices to maintain a high level of security and encrypts sensitive data both in transit and at rest. Stripe and Polmanarkivet use Hypertext transfer protocol secure (HTTPS).
Credit card data is sent securely to Stripe before the sign-up form is submitted. We never see your credit card data. Stripe is PCI-and GDPR-compliant and secure.
How do I cancel my subscription?
You can cancel your subscription whenever you wish. To cancel, please follow these steps:
- Sign in to your account at polmanarkivet.com
- Click on the Account button in the top right corner of the screen and select ‘Change’ next to your subscription category
- Scroll to the bottom, and click "Cancel subscription." In the next window, click "Confirm cancellation."
No matter when you cancel, you will retain access for the period you paid for. Subscription management is fully in your control, so we do not offer refunds unless there are extenuating circumstances—please email us at [email protected]
NOTE: If you click 'Manage' next to your email preferences and switch email delivery off, this does not cancel your paid subscription. It simply stops email delivery. Likewise, canceling your paid subscription will not unsubscribe you from the free email.
Can I unsubscribe from the free newsletter?
Yes, you can click the "Unsubscribe" link at the bottom of any newsletter you receive, or you can manage your email preferences through your account portal.
Will I still have access to paid content if I cancel my subscription early?
You will continue to have access to your subscription for the period you've already paid for, regardless of when you cancel. Subscription management is fully in your control, meaning you're responsible for handling cancellations. Once you cancel, your access will cease at the end of the paid period. Please note: you won't receive a notification when this happens—you'll simply lose access to the paid features when the period expires. If you're worried about forgetting the auto-renewal, you can cancel your subscription in advance through the usual cancellation process.
Can I change from a monthly to an annual plan?
Yes, you can. If you switch to an annual subscription from a monthly subscription, you will be immediately upgraded to an annual subscription, and your year of paid access will start on the date you upgrade. That means if you have time left in the month you already paid for, it will be lost; therefore, if this concerns you, consider waiting until your current paid month has nearly or totally run out before upgrading to an annual subscription.
If you switch from an annual to a monthly subscription, you will retain access to the site through the annual period for which you paid, and then will be charged monthly after that. (This is a good solution if you are concerned about losing track of annual auto-renewal, but wish to prevent gaps in service.)
Can I gift a subscription?
Yes, you can! Sign-up as you normally would but enter the giftee's email as the recipient at checkout and complete the transaction. Email [email protected] with the subject "Gift subscription" and attach proof of your purchase (e.g. the credit card charge, or have your giftee forward you the receipt email), plus the giftee's email, and we can cancel auto-renewal for you if desired.
Can I make a one-time contribution to Polmanarkivet?
Yes. If you prefer to make a one-time contribution rather than an ongoing membership, you can do so on our Donate page. Patrons who make a significant contribution are recognised as a "Steward of the Archive" for that year as a special thank you.
Can I update my email address or other personal information?
Yes, sign in to your account to make these changes.
